I don't play Fortnite because I'm terrible at shooters(I know with practice I could get better, but I cbf). My bf however does play it. From what I can tell it is mostly because it is a Battle Royale. He has played a good amount of other Battle Royale games too. Looting, survival, and last one standing. I can see how that CAN be fun. I can also see how the cartoony aesthetic can turn people off, but that is also what draws people in.I will say I enjoyed watching movies that focused on Battle Royales like "The Hunger Games" and the Japanese "Battle Royale" movie.
I have a problem with shooters too but I found a royale game that I enjoy. It's the Southsun Survival activity that Guild Wars 2 holds on Wed and Sat. It's fun even with 3-4 players and you can even continue playing even after you are eliminated during that round (as a ghostly mote). Here's an old video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjOzzNNQ7HE
